The whole is other than the sum of the parts is a quote by Gestalt Psychologist Kurt Koffka. He claims that the reading of something is separated from the components – the mind creates a whole with its self-organising tendencies.

The whole is other than the sum of the parts is also the title of Linda Hofvanders exhibition at Gallery Konstepidemin. In her photographic work the narrative fragments of traces from actions and displacements are given its own leeway. The images have passed through the analogue camera apparatus and are an actual recording of what took place. The viewer meets constructions that can be interpreted and props that can be put to doubts. The images encourage re-evaluations of the ideas around the photographic image and the real.

Linda Hofvander received a MFA in Photography at the School of Photography, University of Gothenburg, in 2010 and a BFA in photography at the London College of Communication, University of the Arts, London in 2006.

She has had solo exhibitions in Stockholm, Paris, Oslo, Helsinki, Gothenburg and Malmö and has participated in group exhibitions such as The Visible. Contemporary Swedish Photography at Artipelag, New Nordic Photography at the Hasselblad Center and Scandinavian Forest at Akershus Kunstsenter in Norway. She is current with her book I am silver and exact, Art and Theory Publishing in 2015 and has previously published the book Ways to describe, raketa press 2010. Hofvander  is represented by Cecilia Hillström Gallery, Stockholm.

Linda Hofvander is invited by Annika von Hausswolff, and the exhibition is a part of GIBCA extended. The project is implemented with the help of Gothenburg Culture Grant Pronto.
